We protect the Cromarty Firth

The Cromarty Firth is a very special environment consisting of Sites of Special Scientific interests, a Special Protected Area, a Special Area of Conservation and Ramsar sites for the protection of birds. The wildlife is abundant and the nature is spectacular.

Every year, over 30,000 birds spend winter with us in the Firth, feeding on the 21 species of algae and eelgrass. We are home to 300 harbour seals and have a group of 195 bottlenose dolphins, one of only two resident populations in the UK.

We welcome 10,000 Scottish salmon every year, travelling through the Cromarty Firth to their home river systems in the wider Highlands. Not long after, 200,000 of their smolts travel back down the Firth, through the Sutors and out to the North Sea.

We work tirelessly with local organisations to maintain clean water and a healthy environment – together with our shore excursion partners we care deeply for the Highlands, and we’re proud to welcome you to this diverse and spectacular area. Please tread gently and leave only footprints to ensure the environment remains special for generations to come.
