Filming at The Port

To fly an unmanned aerial system (drone) over any part of the waters or facilities for which the Cromarty Firth Port Authority (Port of Cromarty Firth) is responsible, you must request permission. An application form is available from the Port Office.

You must meet the following conditions of flight:

  • A risk assessment along with a safe operating procedure must be undertaken.
  • Public liability and if necessary employee liability insurance must be held.
  • Operators Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) registration certificate or written confirmation thereof must be held.
  • PoCF document ID 311-02 Use of Unmanned Aerial Systems must be complied with.
  • All personnel undertaking the works must be trained, competent and authorised to operate the UAS.
  • All plant and equipment must conform with and be maintained in accordance with Provision of work equipment regulations 1998.
  • All persons accessing the Invergordon Service Base/Saltburn Pier must have attended the site induction and where applicable have been issued with an access pass
  • UAS operator and associated personnel will be under the responsibility of the Facility User (their Client) in control of the project/work area
  • High visibility clothing, hard hat and safety boots must be worn as a minimum on-site along with any relevant personal protective equipment required for the work activity.

Due to our location and the incredible vessels that visit our Port, we receive many requests to film here. This ranges from local photographers to Hollywood production companies. The vast majority of requests involve filming onboard a rig.

Our best advice if this is your desire is to contact the rig owners. It is extremely unlikely that you will be granted permission due to the health and safety constraints involved, but the asset owners are the people who will make the decision. In the event that you are permitted access, please let us know and we will assist wherever we can with logistical arrangements and safe navigation to the assets in question.

If you would like to film or photograph the Firth, you can do so from many areas around the shores. Please refer to our drone policy if you are using an unmanned aerial system.
